Beating the Odds
HCM Strategists and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation convened a series of conversations with a diverse group of 32 postsecondary institutions about what it takes to help students — particularly low-income, minority and adult students — successfully earn a degree.
Beating the Odds: What It Means and Why It’s Important highlights these practices in action and provides a blueprint for others to follow. The report uncovered four key approaches that are necessary for any postsecondary institution to dramatically improve student success:
- Help students prepare for the rigors of college
- Focus on retention through student support systems
- Find new and innovative ways for students to access postsecondary education
- Demonstrate leadership in creating a culture of completion
