Why I work with HCM
I am driven by the belief that all people should have the ability to pursue life to the fullest – to dream without false boundaries – and to have the ability to realize and achieve those dreams on equal footing.
Chief of Staff
Jeff Stanley is a seasoned higher education professional who brings to his work at HCM Strategists a background in institution and state policy and an abiding commitment to expanding opportunities for students. In his current role as chief of staff, Jeff has led the development of the operations, finance and human resource department for HCM, and manages and supervises the operations team. As the firm has grown, he has been instrumental in crafting, revising and implementing the firm’s organizational structures and internal policies and processes. Jeff also continues to lend his strategic and policy development expertise to HCM’s postsecondary education clients, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Lumina Foundation.
Jeff began his career as a social worker, counseling and providing services to children and youth in foster and group home settings. In this work, Jeff heard a common theme from every child – they viewed a college degree as the ticket to a better life, as the means by which they could overcome their circumstance.
Influenced by these children, Jeff launched a career in higher education, working to open the doors of opportunity for all students seeking educational achievement. He held leadership positions at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, where he managed alumni relations, guided the reorganization of the student affairs division and supported the vice chancellor for undergraduate education. He cut his state policy teeth as associate commissioner for policy and planning for the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, overseeing the development and management of the state’s strategic plan for higher education and progress on statewide and institutional goals and metrics – a plan and accountability system that had not been updated since 1970 when the Commission was statutorily created.
Before joining HCM, Jeff served as associate vice president for the State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO), where he managed a project for Complete College America that provided policy and data systems support to states working to increase college completion rates. He also worked as a consultant to HCM, managing state grants in Indiana and Ohio to strengthen college attainment rates through increased productivity.
Jeff and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Broomfield, Colorado, where he is an active member of his church and community.
