HCM Announces Newest Education Policy Fellows

HCM Strategists is thrilled to welcome to our team our newest policy fellows for 2022: Sunga Kufeyani and Lydia Mason!

Sunga joins HCM as our postsecondary fellow and is originally from Lilongwe, Malawi. She is passionate about human rights and social and educational policies, but she is especially passionate about empowering girls in marginalized communities experiencing poverty. She is the co-founder of Loving Arms Malawi, a nonprofit committed to improving girls’ education in rural Malawi by leveraging community participation in fighting obstacles and traditions that hinder educational progress. Sunga recently completed her graduate degree in public administration: social justice at the University of Cincinnati. In September, she will begin a doctorate program at the University of Minnesota, working toward a Ph.D. in comparative international development education. In her spare time, Sunga enjoys podcasts, especially true-crime podcasts.

Joining our K-12 team, Lydia is a high school English teacher with a Bachelor of Arts degree in politics with minors in inequality and global & urban education from New York University (NYU). While at NYU, she worked as a writing tutor and teaching assistant, where she nurtured her passion for education. As a result, she became the student director of first-year programs at NYU and founded an education startup called Pro BoKnow, where she helped low-income and marginalized students realize their dreams of attending college. Outside of teaching, she is an educational consultant and college admissions advisor. Originally from Louisville, KY, Lydia currently resides in Jersey City, NJ, with her fiancé and two cats. Lydia enjoys spending her time reading, watching TikToks, exercising and indulging in reality TV, especially The Real Housewives.

Welcome to the HCM team, Sunga & Lydia!
